The Perfect Heart

One day a young man was standing in the middle of the town proclaiming that he had the most beautiful heart in the whole valley. A large crowd gathered and they all admired his heart for it was perfect. There was not a mark or a flaw in it. Yes, they all agreed it truly was the most beautiful heart they had ever seen. The young man was very proud and boasted more loudly about his beautiful heart.

Suddenly, an old man appeared at the front of the crowd and said “Why your heart is not nearly as beautiful as mine.” The crowd and the young man looked at the old man’s heart. It was beating strongly, but full of scars, it had places where pieces had been removed and other pieces put in, but they didn’t fit quite right and there were several jagged edges. In fact, in some places there were deep gouges where whole pieces were missing.

The people stared - how can he say his heart is more beautiful, they thought? The young man looked at the old man’s heart and saw its state and laughed. “You must be joking,” he said. “Compare your heart with mine, mine is perfect and yours is a mess of scars and tears.”

“Yes,” said the old man, “Yours is perfect looking but I would never trade with you. You see, every scar represents a person to whom I have given my love - I tear out a piece of my heart and give it to them, and often they give me a piece of their heart which fits into the empty place in my heart, but because the pieces aren’t exact, I have some rough edges, which I cherish, because they remind me of the love we shared. Sometimes I have given pieces of my heart away, and the other person hasn’t returned a piece of his heart to me. These are the empty gouges - - giving love is taking a chance. Although these gouges are painful, they stay open, reminding me of the love I have for these people too, and I hope someday they may return and fill the space I have waiting. So now do you see what true beauty is?”

The young man stood silently with tears running down his cheeks. He walked up to the old man, reached into his perfect young and beautiful heart, and ripped a piece out. He offered it to the old man with trembling hands. The old man took his offering, placed it in his heart and then took a piece from his old scarred heart and placed it in the wound in the young man’s heart. It fit, but not perfectly, as there were some jagged edges. The young man looked at his heart, not perfect anymore but more beautiful than ever, since love from the old man’s heart flowed into his. They embraced and walked away side by side. How sad it must be to go through life with a whole untouched heart.

Keep Your Dream

I have a friend named Monty Roberts who owns a horse ranch in San Ysidro. He has let me use his house to put on fund-raising events to raise money for youth at risk programs.
The last time I was there he introduced me by saying, “I want to tell you why I let Jack use my horse. It all goes back to a story about a young man who was the son of an itinerant horse trainer who would go from stable to stable, race track to race track, farm to farm and ranch to ranch, training horses. As a result, the boy’s high school career was continually interrupted. When he was a senior, he was asked to write a paper about what he wanted to be and do when he grew up.

“That night he wrote a seven-page paper describing his goal of someday owning a horse ranch. He wrote about his dream in great detail and he even drew a diagram of a 200-acre ranch, showing the location of all the buildings, the stables and the track. Then he drew a detailed floor plan for a 4,000-square-foot house that would sit on a 200-acre dream ranch.

“He put a great deal of his heart into the project and the next day he handed it in to his teacher. Two days later he received his paper back. On the front page was a large red F with a note that read, `See me after class.’


“The boy with the dream went to see the teacher after class and asked, `Why did I receive an F?’

“The teacher said, `This is an unrealistic dream for a young boy like you. You have no money. You come from an itinerant family. You have no resources. Owning a horse ranch requires a lot of money. You have to buy the land. You have to pay for the original breeding stock and later you’ll have to pay large stud fees. There’s no way you could ever do it.’ Then the teacher added, `If you will rewrite this paper with a more realistic goal, I will reconsider your grade.’

“The boy went home and thought about it long and hard. He asked his father what he should do. His father said, `Look, son, you have to make up your own mind on this. However, I think it is a very important decision for you.’ “Finally, after sitting with it for a week, the boy turned in the same paper, making no changes at all.

He stated, “You can keep the F and I’ll keep my dream.”

Monty then turned to the assembled group and said, “I tell you this story because you are sitting in my 4,000-square-foot house in the middle of my 200-acre horse ranch. I still have that school paper framed over the fireplace. He added, “The best part of the story is that two summers ago that same schoolteacher brought 30 kids to camp out on my ranch for a week.” When the teacher was leaving, he said, “Look, Monty, I can tell you this now. When I was your teacher, I was something of a dream stealer. During those years I stole a lot of kids’ dreams. Fortunately you had enough gumption not to give up on yours.”

“Don’t let anyone steal your dreams. Follow your heart, no matter what.”

Mencari pekerjaan sulit di zaman ini. Jumlah angkatan kerja tidak sesuai dengan ketersediaan formasi pekerjaan. Angka pengangguran meningkat setiap tahun. Data tentang pengangguran terbuka dari tahun 1996 ke 2000 meningkat, yaitu sebesar 4,228,115 orang (4,9%) tahun 1996 menjadi 5,965,795 orang (6,1%) pada tahun 2000. (Pengukuran pengangguran terbuka dalam sakernas, laporan # 35 paper statistik # 7, uzair suhaimi, yahya jammal, 2001)

Usaha sektor non formal menjadi pilihan mereka yang tidak mendapatkan pekerjaan. Ironinya, kesempatan mendirikian usaha kecil tidak menarik bagi mereka yang memiliki latar belakang pendidikan relatif tinggi.

Kompetensi Saja Sudah Cukup?

Idealnya lulusan perguruan tinggi memiliki kemampuan melakukan analitis, yaitu merubah persoalan yang rumit menjadi sederhana. Kemampuan analitis dapat digunakan untuk mengungkapkan kemungkinan resiko dan peluang pendirian sebuah usaha.

Sayangnya kebanyakan lulusan perguruan tinggi lebih menonjolkan aspek munculnya dampak negatif daripada peluang bisnis itu sendiri. Sehingga mereka tidak memiliki keberanian untuk memulai usaha.

Bagaimana mungkin cukup bagi penyelenggara program studi hanya dengan mengandalkan mata kuliah kewirausahaan (2 sks) untuk dapat menghasilkan lulusan yang memiliki kompetensi teknologi dan spirit kewirausahaan (technopreneurship). Apalagi sistem perkuliahaan kewirausahaan lebih banyak di ruang kelas.

Modal Usaha sebagai Penghambat?

Selanjutnya aspek permodalan adalah salah satu faktor penghambat lahirnya wirausahawan muda. Modal dianggap segala-galanya. Perhitungan investasi, operasional, dan tingkat pengembalian modal menjadi begitu rumit dan menakutkan. Sehingga mereka lebih memilih sebagai sosok pencari kerja daripada membuka usaha dan lapangan kerja.

Modal usaha penting tetapi bukan dijadikan alasan untuk tidak memulai usaha. Modal merupakan sumberdaya kekayaan perusahaan. Pemodal berarti pemilik modal. Sedangkan Modal tidak selalu dalam wujud uang. Sehingga Pemodal adalah pemilik sumberdaya yang bukan selalu uang.

Keberanian = Faktor Kunci

Jadi bagi seseorang yang tak memiliki uang terbuka peluang untuk menjadi pemilik usaha “bussines owner”. Pernyataan banyak orang bahwa modal non uang adalah modal dengkul. Dengan bermodalkan dengkul kaki sendiri, seseorang dapat menahan beban dan berjalan serta beraktivitas usaha. Artinya tanpa diawali modal uang sebuah usaha dapat berdiri dan berjalan serta tumbuh dan berkembang membawa harapan pemiliknya.

Kalau seseorang tidak memiliki dengkul sendiri, gunakan dengkul orang lain. Orang lain tidak akan pernah marah sepanjang ada konpensasi yang menarik dan fleksibel. Membangun kemitraan permodalan merupakan kombinasi yang rasional dan menjadi kekuatan lebih besar daripada modal dengan dengkul sendiri.

Keberanian mengambil resiko adalah syarat utama untuk menjadi pebisnis. Keberanian memulai usaha dengan modal dengkul menandakan kapasitas, kekuatan dan daya saing pebisnis itu sendiri. Semua orang memiliki potensi menjadi pebisnis modal dengkul. Perbedaan menyolok satu dengan yang lain adalah keberanian bertindak.

Sikap berani bertindak mampu mengeliminir hambatan terbesar merintis bisnis, yaitu permodalan. Hambatan ketidaktersediaan modal hendaknya jangan dijadikan alasan untuk tidak memulai, tetapi sebaiknya memicu lahirnya kreatifitas dan gagasan yang gemilang.

Setiap gagasan atau ide yang lahir dari rahim seorang tak ber-uang memiliki daya tahan untuk bertahan dan berpotensi tumbuh berkembang. Beranikah anda menjadi Pebisnis modal dengkul?
